What is the Internet?
The Internet, and the World Wide Web in particular, are important educational tools which provide students and staff members access to a vast array of resources from around the globe. On a global network, however, it is impossible to control all materials and a student may happen on inappropriate sites, deliberately or by accident.
There are three basic elements of the Internet. The biggest component of the Internet is the people, or users. Secondly, the information that the users desire and share. Thirdly, the working parts are the computers, phone lines, modems, and other miscellaneous hardware which do the work.
How students and teachers use the Internet.
* using e-mail
* school research projects
* interchanging ideas
* getting to know people universally
* connecting people and companies around the world
* getting information on latest technology
* resource similar to a library
* receiving pictures, words, videos
* sharing and giving information
* accessing the world
How it will be used in the classroom and library media center.
* accessing the world
* interchanging ideas
* getting information on latest exploration
* sharing and giving information
Use of the Internet is a privilege not a right.

NETWORK SAFETY
As students, faculty and staff become increasingly involved with Internet publishing, it is necessary to have a permission form signed by parents or guardians to allow student first names, last initials (only), works and pictures to be displayed. No individual photograph of a student, or group photo in which students are individually identified, should be published on the Internet. In the case of students, no personal information will be published on the Internet, including the mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, biographical or autobiographical information.
Students should never agree to meet, in person, anyone with whom they have corresponded unless accompanied by an adult they know and trust.
In the event that a published Web site has been created by a student in a non-school environment, that site may be worked on in a school environment only if it does not contain identifiable information as defined above.

NETIQUETTE represents the implied rules of the Internet. It is a lot like table manners and is used so that electronic communication can occur without upsetting other people. For example, you cannot use chain mail or chain letters, offensive language, use of Internet for personal financial gain, or masquerade (pretending to be someone you are not).
PARENTS MUST UNDERSTAND THAT THEIR CHILD MAY ENCOUNTER MATERIAL IN A NETWORK/BULLETIN BOARD THAT THEY MAY CONSIDER INAPPROPRIATE (pornography, vulgar jokes, statements of belief that some may consider immoral, etc.). The student is responsible for not pursuing this material that could be considered offensive.
Penalties and repercussions of violating these guidelines may include:
1. Loss of computer privileges.
2. Administrative warning.
3. Possible suspension.
By signing the Montgomery Acceptable Use Policy, you acknowledge that you:
* Understand the rules and regulations of this Acceptable Use Policy.
* Realize that if the rules are violated, your Internet privilege may be canceled.
* There may be no second chances.
